Event Description

KIB’s Great Indy Cleanup is an anti-litter program in partnership with the City of Indianapolis designed to combat heavy litter and debris that has accumulated in public spaces such as streets, alleys, greenspaces and waterways.

Update:

We will begin at 10am on Saturday morning on 64th street between Central and Park. The largest target area will be the alley north of 64th street, east of Central.  After that, there are a few other potential problem areas.  Time permitting, we'll sweep the College Ave bridge over the canal.

We will be meeting the packer truck at the CVS at noon to start picking up piles of trash from the morning cleanup.

We're going to be hitting the alleys north of 63rd street between Central and Broadway up to Riverview.  Please message me or post below if you'd like to volunteer and have a suggestion for a cleanup location.

Below are the quadrant dates for the April 2014 Great Indy Cleanup citywide event.

  • Saturday, April 19th Gary Loveless & Charles Ingram (Gary Loveless is the Neighborhood Liaison for Warfleigh)
  • Resources We are currently assigned a packer truck at noon.
  • Target Area Alleys east of Central, north of 63rd street by request. I think this would be a great way to see what we can do with the city's help removing debris.
  • Warfleigh Start Time 10:00am The packer truck will meet us at CVS at noon, so I'd like to get a two hour head start to clean alleys so we'll be ready to load the truck.

What KIB provides
  • Packer Trucks / Dumpsters – In conjunction with the City of Indianapolis KIB will provide dumpsters and removal (may not be used for personal purposes). During the dates of the April Great Indy Cleanup Event City packer trucks are also available for community cleanups.
  • Cleanup supplies – Trash bags, gloves, and water (while supplies last)

Additional Cleanup Resources

Please Remember:
The dumpster provided is NOT for personal use (cleaning out garages, basements, homeowner association property, etc.) or the personal use of volunteers/neighbors. Disposal of the collected trash is donated by South Side Landfill, and is intended for cleanup of public spaces only. Failure to comply jeopardizes the neighborhood’s ability to benefit from future resources from KIB.

Ours is the alley between Central and Park between 64th and Riverside. Thanks!

Hi, I'm Angus. I'm Donna's son, and I'm doing an exhibition project for my school, CFI #84. I chose litter cleanup as a subject for my project, and I think that this would be a great opportunity do a community service for part of my project. As an additional service, I would like to make some yard signs to advertise the KIB cleanup on the 19th and remove them afterwards.  If this is okay, I will do it and see you all, with my parents, on Saturday the 19th. I may also take some pictures of all of us working for my project.

Angus,

That sounds like a great idea.  Thank you for the help.

I drove the alleys in the target area today and noted these areas that could use attention.  Please post in this event area or message me directly if you've noticed other problem areas that you're willing to help clear out for this event.

For the most part I noticed that weed trees will be our target, as there thankfully aren't large piles of debris or garbage in the area.:

1. Alley east of Central, north of 64th:  Impassable in parts due to brush, so will need to be cut and bundled

2. Alley east of Park, north of 64th: A few areas that could use some brush cutting to prevent overgrowth later

3. Alleys between 63rd and 64th, and between Central and Broadway: These two areas are in fairly good shape for now, with no obvious overgrowth or trash buildup.

Optional, not included in initial requests.  This paved alley backs up to houses on College avenue, and is a well traveled alley serviced by trash trucks weekly

4. Alley east of Broadway, north of 63rd: A few areas that could use some brush cutting to prevent overgrowth later

5. Alley east of Broadway, north of 64th: A few areas on northern end of this stretch with some brush that could be cut down, and there is some debris in the alleyway

6. Alley east of Broadway, north of 65th: A few areas with overgrown brush.

I ran into Heidi and Tyler Sawatzky this afternoon as they were putting up a fence.  They cleared a ton of brush already from the worst section of alley in our target area.

We'll be looking to help finish off cutting it up and bundling it for the trash truck to pick up since they'll be tied up early on Saturday.

Thanks Steve! We've got bundles stacked along the alley ready to be hauled away. One or both of us will be here Saturday to help load our stuff.

Great, just let us know if how much is left.  We'll be meeting on the 64th street end of your alley and work our way up to cut and bundle until people can drive real sized cars through there.
